Arizona Bankruptcy Stats on the Rise

by Christy Thompson on March 2, 2010

Chandler Bankruptcy Lawyers Report: Up 45% from the same time last year, the East Valley Tribune reports that there were 2,493 bankruptcies filed in Arizona in January of 2010.

Wow. The same time last year there were 1,714 bankruptcies filed. So is this bad news or a sign of acceptance? Only time will tell. If things are as bad or worse for January 2011, then this picture will need a much prettier frame.

As Arizona bankruptcy attorneys, we see and hear about bankruptcy all day. People from all walks of life are in dire need of debt relief in Arizona. People are facing foreclosures, astronomical outstanding medical debt, and are behind on all manner of credit card bills and car payments.

Well folks, it may sting in the meantime, but filing for bankruptcy in Arizona is not a bad idea if you’re one of the millions who meet the above description. As far as the total protection that Chapter 13 offers, according to the Trib, “Chapter 13 cases, which require at least some debt repayment, were up 61 percent statewide, from 313 to 505. In the Valley, those filings were up nearly 74 percent, from 219 to 380.” (These numbers reflect from Jan. 2009 to Jan. 2010.)

Bankruptcy helps people in financial distress, period. These people were taken advantage of and predatory lenders all over the country banked. If it hurts the creditors to get the people back on their feet, then that’s the way the cookie crumbles. Consumers have to get back on their feet or the whole country will face another economic collapse.
